Our work in Tanzania

Investing since 2022

Priorities:

  • Advocating for policies to reduce child marriage and other forms of gender-based violence (GBV)

  • Ensuring the implementation of policies that enable adolescent mothers to return to school

  • Supporting girls from marginalised, rural communities to access education

Strengthening rights

  • Nationally, 31% of girls are married before 18 and 22% are pregnant by age 19. Despite the government ending a policy preventing adolescent mothers from attending public schools in 2021, many young mothers still cannot return to school due to poor implementation of the policy change.

  • Our partners worked with the government to create national “re-entry” guidelines and raise awareness in their communities to enable thousands of young mothers to continue their education.

Reducing GBV

  • 88% of girls experience violence in school, where patriarchal norms perpetuate gender-based violence by classmates and staff, contributing to high dropout rates.

  • Our partner facilitated the revision of child protection guidelines within Tanzania’s National Plan of Action to End Violence Against Women and Children. They also created school clubs to develop girls’ life skills and sexual and reproductive health knowledge, and help girls raise awareness of their rights.

Approach

Our grantmaking approach

Through our Education Champion Network, we invest in civil society organisations dedicated to advancing policies that strengthen and resource girls’ right to education. We aim to allocate at least 20% of our grants to organisations led by girls or young women to realise their powerful potential to generate new solutions and lead change.

We consider our grantees to be true partners and strive to catalyse and complement their work at the local, national and global levels. Our flexible, multi-year grants provide our partners with the stability and agility they need to achieve lasting impact for girls.
