Ethiopia

Across Ethiopia, child marriage, gender-based violence and gender discrimination prevent girls from completing 12 years of education. These barriers are even greater in conflict-affected areas, where damaged schools limit girls’ access to education.

Our work in Ethiopia

Investing since 2020

Priorities:

  • Advocating for policies that ensure schools are safe for girls during and after conflict

  • Ensuring government plans address conflict, rebuild school infrastructure and reduce education barriers for adolescent girls

  • Calling for better resource allocation to support gender-responsive education in conflict-affected areas.

Strengthening rights

  • Conflict interrupted the education of millions of Ethiopian girls and worsened education barriers such as child marriage and gender-based violence.

  • To ensure girls' right to education during and after conflict, our partner promotes gender-responsive rebuilding plans by offering human rights training, amplifying girls’ demands and assessing their needs.

Securing resources

  • Ongoing conflict throughout the country worsened education funding gaps.

  • In collaboration with educational institutions and other stakeholders, our partner advocated to the East Hararghe government to allocate exclusive funding to support girls’ education amid regional conflict.

Approach

Our grantmaking approach

Through our Education Champion Network, we invest in civil society organisations dedicated to advancing policies that strengthen and resource girls’ right to education. We aim to allocate at least 20% of our grants to organisations led by girls or young women to realise their powerful potential to generate new solutions and lead change.

We consider our grantees to be true partners and strive to catalyse and complement their work at the local, national and global levels. Our flexible, multi-year grants provide our partners with the stability and agility they need to achieve lasting impact for girls.
