Afghanistan

Afghanistan is the only country in the world that bans girls’ secondary education. Girls and women are unable to attend school past the primary level, work or participate in public life.

Our work in Afghanistan

Investing since 2016

Priorities:

  • Supporting alternative and digital learning programmes for girls

  • Raising global awareness of gender apartheid in support of Afghan girls’ right to education

  • Strengthening networks of Afghan women activists and organisations campaigning for the recognition of gender apartheid as a crime under international law

Increasing access to alternative education

  • Since the Taliban took over the country in 2021, they have banned nearly 1.4 million girls from going to school past grade six.

  • We support alternative learning programmes for girls delivered through home- and community-based schools, digital platforms, radio and television.

Challenging gender apartheid

  • The Taliban uses laws and policies to deprive millions of girls and women of their fundamental rights, a system of oppression called gender apartheid.

  • We advocate alongside partners for recognising gender apartheid as a crime under international law to create a legal avenue for victims, survivors and the global community to hold the Taliban accountable and ensure girls’ right to education is reinstated.

Approach

Through our Afghanistan Initiative, we support Afghan women activists and civil society organisations campaigning for the recognition of gender apartheid as a crime under international law, protecting girls' right to education and providing alternative and digital learning programmes for girls.

Advocacy

We aim to strengthen advocacy networks and raise global awareness to promote the recognition of gender apartheid as a crime under international law and mobilise support for girls’ right to education in Afghanistan.

The American Society of International Law presented our co-founder Malala and Malala Fund with the 2024 Champion of the International Rule of Law Award for our work to end gender apartheid in Afghanistan, recognising our partners’ courageous advocacy efforts.
